Abstract In 2005, Singapore adopted a new framework for workplace safety and health. This policy paper is an update of the original framework, taking into account recent developments in the national focus on managing safety at the workplace and the need to look into new and health-related workplace hazards. Two approaches to occupational health management are proposed, namely a compliance-based regulatory framework and a greater focus on eliminating or reducing occupational health hazards. Four strategies are proposed to address different classes (established, emerging and unknown) hazards: targeted intervention programmes; monitoring and intelligence gathering; research and standards development; promotion of good practices.
