Abstract The marketing of chemicals - especially those that could harm human health - has been regulated by REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals) since 1 June 2007. Not that implementing this regulation will automatically mean better prevention of workplace chemical risks. Real progress, which includes outlawing the most toxic chemicals from workplaces, will not happen unless union representatives take ownership of the regulation. This booklet aims to help them carry out that vital front-line job. Contents: why a REACH regulation was needed; responsibilities of employers; REACH and EU worker protection laws; how trade unions can make REACH work for them.
