Abstract Occupational respiratory sensitization to small laboratory mammals applies to biological, medical and pharmaceutical research. The condition is generally immuno-allergic and IgE-dependant. The most common allergens have been identified and characterized, in particular for rats and mice, the most frequently-involved species. Diagnosis usually relies on symptoms linked to contact with animals and positive skin or serological tests. Various preventive and protective measures are discussed.
