Title Performance of chest radiograph and CT scan for lung cancer screening in asbestos-exposed workers
Bibliographic information Aug. 2009, Vol.66, No.8, p.529-534. Illus. 31 ref.
Abstract The aim of this study was to compare the sensitivity and the specificity of chest CT scans with chest radiographs for the biennial screening of bronchopulmonary cancer in a cohort of asbestos-exposed workers. The screening procedures were applied to 972 individuals who had been highly exposed to asbestos. The study focused on the 1230 screens for which a two-year follow-up period was available, during which 24 cases of bronchopulmonary cancer were diagnosed. Findings are discussed. Overall, the study confirms the superior sensitivity of chest CT scans compared with conventional chest radiography. A recommended diameter of 5mm is proposed as the threshold for considering non-calcified lesions as "suspect" for the surveillance of asbestos-exposed individuals.
