Title Volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde as explaining factors for sensory irritation in office environments
Bibliographic information Apr. 2009, Vol.6, No.4, p.239-247. 49 ref.
Abstract This study evaluated volatile organic compound (VOC) measurements from 176 office buildings, including 23 buildings for which formaldehyde measurements had also been conducted. The 50 most abundant VOCs and their concentrations in 520 air samples were analyzed. At the concentrations observed in the buildings, formaldehyde was estimated to be a more likely cause of sensory irritation than the mixture of common VOCs. Subjective symptoms of workers in 20 buildings were obtained by means of a questionnaire on indoor air quality. The most frequent symptoms involved the upper respiratory tract. However, no relationship could be shown between the reported symptoms and the concentrations of VOCs and formaldehyde in these buildings.
