Title Occupational exposure to wood dust and health effects on the respiratory system in a minor industrial estate in Bursa/Turkey
Bibliographic information 2009, Vol.22, No.1, p.43-50. 36 ref.
Abstract The aim of this study was to estimate occupational exposure to wood dust in the furniture industry in an industrial estate in Bursa, Turkey. The study involved 328 woodworkers and 328 unexposed controls. Data on respiratory health were collected by means of questionnaires and medical examinations, including spirometry. Exposure to wood dust was evaluated from workplace sampling. The average dust concentration at the workplace was 2.04mg/m3. 53.7% of the workers reported a blocked nose while working, 43.0% had eye irritation, 41.2% had itching eyes and 23.8% had a runny nose. No symptoms were observed in the control group while they were working at the workplace. The mean FEV1 and FVC values of woodworkers, among both smokers and non smokers, were significantly lower than those of controls. Implications of these findings are discussed.
