Title Injuries and fatalities to U.S. farmers and farm workers 55 years and older
Bibliographic information Mar. 2009, Vol.52, No.3, p.185-194. Illus. 78 ref.
Abstract Data from two national surveillance systems were analyzed with respect to fatal and non-fatal injuries occurring to United States farmers aged 55 years and older. Older farmers and farm workers averaged more than 26,000 lost-time injuries annually, with an injury rate of 4.5 injuries/100 workers compared to an overall farming injury rate of 4.8 injuries/100 workers. Fatality data show that older farmers accounted for over half of all farming deaths between 1992 and 2004, and had a fatality rate of 45.8 deaths/100,000 workers compared to the overall farming fatality rate of 25.4 deaths/100,000 workers. Most common causes of fatal injury to older farmers were tractors (46%), trucks (7%) and animals (5%). Implications of these findings are discussed.
