Abstract Little is known on the effects of human exposure to nanoparticles. However, there have been many studies on ultrafine particles, which are notably present in motor exhausts and urban pollution, but are also formed as undesirable side products in some industrial processes such as welding, thermal degradation and metal treatment. They cause cardiorespiratory effects among susceptible subjects. By analogy, one can expect that nanoparticles will cause similar effects.
