Abstract In this study, apprentices at a large German automobile manufacturer were examined for potential negative health effects of a newly established shift work system. Over a period of two years, the first batch of 124 apprentices trained within the new system (study group) was compared with the last batch of 77 apprentices trained within the conventional system (control group). Participants were subjected to medical examinations at baseline and after 12 and 24 months. Findings are discussed. Overall, the new shift system did not seem to have any negative health effect.
