Abstract The aim of this medical guide was to provide an international approach to problems encountered by ships' captains faced with injury or diseases on board ships not carrying a medical doctor. It consists of three parts: international medical guide for ships; recommended contents of ships' medical chests; medical section of the international code of signals, to enable the ship's captain to ask the necessary questions and the medical officer to send adequate instructions. It has since been superseded by later editions, including the version analyzed under CIS 95-590.
