Abstract Effects of nine social life indicators on annual suicide mortality of male and female Japanese population in the years 1953-1996 were investigated by multiple regression analysis on time series data. Indicators included unemployment rate, participation of women in the labour force, age structure of the population, population density, divorce rates, industry, age and sex. Findings are discussed.
