Abstract Cutting fluids are used in metalworking processes. Various diseases, often associated with cutting fluid constituents, have been observed among exposed users. Cutting fluids are colonized by microorganisms, potentially giving rise to a biological hazard for operators. This article describes in detail the mechanisms of microorganism proliferation, lists the main biological agents identified in the fluids and reports their possible implication in pathologies observed in operators. Finally, maintenance and prevention measures are recommended for controlling biological proliferation in metalworking fluids.
