Abstract There have been a number of serious recent fires in the United Kingdom that started or spread as a result of the use plastic intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) for combustible liquids. Following HSE investigations at the scene of these fires, this research project was undertaken to provide data to allow more reliable hazard evaluations for premises using IBCs for liquid storage and to provide recommendations for changes in IBC selection and design.
