Abstract The objective of this study was to better understand occupational health and safety (OHS) issues in the performing arts, particularly in the areas of theatre, music, singing, dance and the circus. Data were collected by means of literature surveys, focus groups, interviews and job observations. The study enabled: a better understanding of the production context, the producers' difficulties and the needs with respect to OHS management; to draw the list of risk factors and causes of accidents during the preparation of a performance and a show; to document the occupational and health paths of the artists; finally to identify suitable OSH strategies for this sector of activity.
