Abstract The complexity of managing the disposal of low-concentration hazardous wastes is due to their nature and their highly-diverse sources. Furthermore, they are often contained in small-sized packaging. The objective of this study was to characterize chemical hazards in hazardous waste collection facilities. Work procedures in several centres were observed. These procedures are essentially manual and the protective measures implemented are often inadequate. The problem is even more pronounced for the collection of household hazardous waste, given that no analyses are carried out on wastes collected from public waste disposal facilities and no information on the possible presence of hazardous chemicals is currently communicated to the processing operators. Various measures aimed at improving the flow of information to the operators of waste disposal facilities are proposed.
