Abstract This report discusses the safety aspects of high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) oil extraction techniques to be used in the United Kingdom continental shelf (UKCS). Contents: summary of the scope for HPHT developments in the UKCS; review of HPHT incidents and definition of the associated safety issues; review of the engineering and management solutions implemented by the UKCS industry; conclusion that although the UKCS industry is on the right track, a number of issues still need to be solved. Based on workshop discussions, a number of collaborative research and development projects are identified, together with other issues that require attention.
