Abstract This article summarizes the main health hazards related to noise together with the findings of a survey of noise levels in a small Nigerian city. Topics addressed: sources of noise (road traffic, small electricity generators, food grinding machines); health effects of noise (hearing loss, stress, sleep disturbances, tachycardia); problems associated with noise control (lack of effective legislation, poor enforcement of, and compliance with, existing regulations, unsafe behaviour and poor safety consciousness).
