Abstract This information note is aimed at researchers and developers of nanotechnologies. It advises a precautionary approach to dealing with the largely still unknown hazards of nanotechnology. Contents: description of nanotechnology and nanomaterials; risk assessment; legislation (COSHH, see CIS 03-1023); scientific uncertainty; health risks; exposure potential; control measures; personal protective equipment; health monitoring; safety risks (catalytic effects, fire and explosion); management arrangements (work procedures, training, supervision, information of personnel).
