Abstract The United Kingdom Health and Safety Commission has published guidance aimed at board level directors and their equivalents in public sector enterprises, setting out their responsibilities with respect to health and safety. It recommends that at least one board member be appointed "health and safety director" with a supervisory role for occupational safety and health. This article discusses the importance of providing board level directors with suitable information and training to ensure that their role is effective. Among the topics addressed: United Kingdom legislation concerning the liability of board members; case studies highlighting failures at board level; studies showing improvements in OSH after active board involvement.
