Abstract Conclusions of this criteria document, which reflects the state of knowledge as of 2005: 4-hydroxybutylacrylate is a high boiling-point, reactive, clear liquid used as a chemical intermediate product in the manufacturing of automobile varnishes. The main modes of entry are through ingestion and skin penetration. Animal studies show low toxicity (LD50 between 500 to 1000mg/kg), with few symptoms appearing below the lethal dose. It is a skin and eye irritant. In vitro studies show the product to be non-mutagenic. Although no experimental data are available, carcinogenicity is considered unlikely.
