Abstract Exposure to plants may cause rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma or urticaria. Diagnosis is usually based on the concurrent existence of work-related symptoms and positive skin and/or serum allergy tests. This review article describes the allergic reactivity of various plant allergens, identifies the agents responsible for rhinitis and asthma in various agricultural and industrial sectors and examines diagnostic methods. Prevention requires reducing to a minimum all work tasks involving the formation of large quantities of dust.
