Abstract This study investigated the occupational determinants of pancreatic cancer. In a case-control study, 595 incident cases of pancreatic cancer diagnosed in Finland between 1984 and 1987 were analysed. A meta-analysis of occupational risk factors was also carried out based on 1,903 studies and 23 chemical agents. Results suggest that heavy occupational exposure to organic solvents, especially aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon solvents (but not chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents), may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. Additional excess was found for exposure to ionizing radiation.
