Abstract A cross-sectional survey of workers at cement plants, sales depots and construction sites in Nigeria was carried out to examine workers' awareness and perception of risks at the workplace, their demographic characteristics, duration of exposure and incidence rates of work-related injuries. The survey involved visits to workplaces and interviewer-administered questionnaires of workers. Findings are discussed and possible reasons for the observed low level of compliance with safety and health legislation are proposed.
