Title Latex sensitization in healthcare workers in Singapore
Bibliographic information 2005, Vol.34, p.376-382. 15 ref.
Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the rate of latex sensitization among healthcare workers in Singapore. It involved 313 healthcare workers, of whom 46.6% were operating theatre staff, and a further 71 unexposed controls. All participants answered a self-administered questionnaire relating to latex exposure and glove-related symptoms. Latex sensitization was determined by skin prick testing to latex and latex-specific IgE detection. Findings are discussed. The prevalence of latex sensitization among healthcare workers was 9.6%. It was concluded that latex sensitization among healthcare workers in Singapore should be considered a significant occupational health risk. Increased screening and awareness of this problem is essential to identify those at risk.
