Abstract Since stringed instrument musicians have to maintain a static sitting posture, they frequently suffer from musculoskeletal disorders. This report describes the design and evaluation of a stool that allows a dynamic sitting posture. The postural stability and muscular activity of violinists and violists were evaluated using a standard stool and this new stool. The new stool was found to reduce the amplitude and frequency of trunk movements. It is suggested that the ergonomic stool be integrated into the regular practices of musicians so that they adopt postures that minimize excessive and inappropriate trunk movements and reduce the probability of incidence of low back pain.
