Abstract This paper examines the benefits of good and healthy working conditions and explains how to evaluate the costs and benefits of improving the working environment. It provides examples of the economic impact of the working environment in relation to the costs of accidents, absenteeism, turnover and new recruitment, workers' wellbeing and company performance. It also addresses the economic effects of new risks in working life such as HIV/AIDS and stress.
