Abstract This paper was prepared for the Economic Analysis and Evaluation Division, Health Canada. It examines two main issues: the work environment and organizational factors that positively influence workers' health and wellbeing, and the relationship between healthy workplaces and productivity. Topics covered include: an overview of the major perspectives on health, work and productivity; measurement issues in the areas of health outcomes and organizational-level productivity; characteristics of healthy and unhealthy workplaces and their economic impact; challenges faced in trying to create workplaces that are healthy and productive; recommendations for employers, researchers, policy makers and other stakeholders.
