Abstract This project involved the evaluation of a system consisting of the separation of solid and liquid manure in a pig facility and its effects on odour, toxic gas emissions and bioaerosol formation. Air samples were collected twice a week during 16 weeks, and concentrations were measured for the following pollutants: bacteria, moulds, endotoxins, ammonia, methane, hydrogen sulphide and nitrous oxide. Other data collected included ventilation throughputs and a subjective evaluation of smell. Findings are discussed. The separation had little effect except for ammonia emissions, that were reduced by half.
