Abstract This report describes a probabilistic model for estimating the risk of worker exposure to harmful substances in the workplace. It also presents examples of application of the model to five substances (trimethyl pentene, aniline, dichloroaniline, vinyl acetate and dibutyl phthalate). Results of the probabilistic evaluation are compared with those of occupational hygiene reference values that require the implementation of protective measures at the workplace, obtained through a deterministic evaluation. The impact on regulations of the use of these methods is discussed.
