Title Using gas chromatography for indoor-air quality control in conservation and renovation studios
Bibliographic information 2005, Vol.11, No.3, p.251-261. Illus. 17 ref.
Abstract The air concentration of solvent vapours was measured in an art conservation studio and a screen printing studio for a period of 5 to 7 years. Air samples were analysed using gas chromatography. Volatile solvents (aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters and ketones) were detected. These compounds have a wide range of applications in the cleaning and removing of old varnishes, lacquers and paints and inhalation is the main route of exposure. Results indicated that typical exposure was limited to 2-4 hours a day and there was a decrease in the concentration of air pollutants over a 6 year period.
