Bibliographic information Nov. 2005, Vol.37, No.6, p.1019-1024. Illus. 11 ref.
Abstract In this article, data on fishing vessel accidents collected from the United Kingdom Marine Accident Investigation Branch are presented and an analysis is carried out to determine the most common causes of these accidents. Data are presented by type of accident, by vessel length and by accident cause. Analysis shows that from 1994 to 1999, machinery damage contributed to over 50% of all accidents. Other incidents include foundering/flooding, grounding, collisions and contacts, fires and explosions, capsizing and heavy weather damage.
