Abstract Occupational lung disease is a major public health problem in China. The recently transformed industrial structure and expansion of the industrial labour force pose both tremendous challenges and opportunities for occupational health policy and research. New occupational health problems are emerging, while traditional occupational lung diseases continue to occur. This review covers the current status of occupational lung diseases in China with reference to the major challenge this country has been facing, namely pneumoconioses. It also describes relevant scientific research advances made during the past decade.
