Abstract This report analyses published data on the occupational safety and health and environmental aspects of propylene carbonate. It aims to provide guidance for industrial hygienists and other safety and health specialists on its possible use as a substitute for traditional solvents. It is concluded that, given the low toxicity of propylene carbonate, in humans and in the environment, it constitutes an acceptable replacement for solvents such as flammable ketones (e.g. acetone, methyl ethyl ketone). However, the use of protective gloves and glasses is recommended.
