Abstract The Noise at Work Regulations 2005 due to be implemented in April 2006 in the United Kingdom specify lower permissible noise exposure limits than the earlier Noise at Work Regulations 1989 (see CIS 90-21). If risk assessment shows that employees are likely to be exposed to noise above the action level of 87 dB(A), then measuring the noise level for these individuals is essential. This article discusses the issue of noise measurement and explains how to conduct a noise survey using sound level meters and noise dosimeters.
