Abstract The records of 182 patients with penetrating eye injuries being treated in an eye hospital in Lublin, Poland, between 1994 and 2002 were reviewed. 28 of the eye injuries were in agriculture. Results were analysed by age, gender, seasonal variation, cause of injury, place of entry wound, visual acuity and complications of the injury. Most of the injuries were the result of repair and maintenance work (35.7%), wood chopping (25%), machine operation (17.9%), operation of simple tools (10.7%), falls (7.1%) and goring by a cow (3.6%). The study revealed the high risk of this type of injury in rural areas.
