Abstract This article describes the prevention and control of Legionella pneumophila, a bacteria which causes legionellosis (legionnaire disease) and Pontiac fever. Contents: characteristics of the bacteria; factors that contribute to its development (nutrients, resistance against biocides, water temperature); epidemiological aspects; clinical symptoms; diagnosis; prevention; equipment likely to be contaminated (hot and cold drinking water, cooling towers, evaporation condensers); relevant legislation and standards.
