Abstract Detergents are a major cause of occupational irritant contact dermatitis, in particular in the chronic form; some can cause burns. Preventing dermatitis due to contact with detergents is one of the most important ways of reducing the prevalence of occupational dermatoses. Contents of this information note on occupational skin diseases due to detergents: definition of detergents; chemical composition; irritants and allergens present in detergents; epidemiological aspects; diagnosis in occupational settings and in specialized institutions; prognosis; prevention and compensation.
