Abstract Human acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was first described in the early 1980s. Advances in recent years have changed both the type of care and the prognosis for this infection. The integration of persons suffering from this condition into working life is not always easy, even though considerable progress has been achieved. This review article on AIDS addresses the question of HIV infection and work, with an overview of the following main aspects: HIV infection (epidemiology, transmission, diagnosis, clinical features, treatments, prevention of infection); workplace issues (HIV/AIDS testing, vaccination, occupational exposure, high-risk groups); prevention of occupational hazards; HIV infection and employment.
Descriptors (primary) immunodeficiency syndrome; exposure; infection control
Descriptors (secondary) epidemiological aspects; contagion; work aptitude; diagnosis; discriminatory practices; high-risk groups; vaccination; medical treatment; international agreements; statistics
