Abstract This case-control study examined the prevalence of chronic laryngitis in a group of 100 male glassblowers and a control group of 100 male workers engaged in other occupations in the same plant. Data were collected by means of self-administered questionnaires and during medical examinations. After adjustment for possible confounders, such as age, years of service, smoking habits and alcohol consumption, results show a significantly higher prevalence of chronic laryngitis among glassblowers than among controls. However, the duration of exposure was not statistically significant for chronic laryngitis.
