Abstract Although chemicals play a crucial role in food production, the fight against diseases and the promotion of new advances in modern technology, they have the potential to cause serious harm to workers, the public and the environment if improperly handled. A safety culture aimed at the promotion of safety, health and well-being at work has therefore to be established, and school education is paramount for meeting this objective. Contents of this publication aimed at secondary education: ways of exposure of the human body to chemicals; health and safety problems caused by chemicals; environmental impact of chemicals; safety in the use of chemicals; monitoring exposure to chemicals; managing exposure to chemicals; control of major industrial accidents; legislation of chemical safety.
