Abstract This literature survey indicated a lack of epidemiological data on chronic obstructive bronchopneumopathies (COBPs) and asthma in the construction industry, despite the established presence of numerous workplace contaminants known to cause or worsen these diseases. The article describes different types of air contaminants (particles, irritant gases and vapours) and outlines results of epidemiologic studies on COBPs and asthma in the construction industry. It is suggested that better use should be made of data collected by occupational physicians.
