Abstract This study demonstrates the application of fault tree analysis, an approach applied to the safety analysis of technical equipment, in occupational safety. It results in a hazard model expressed in the form of an occupational hazard tree for use in the assessment of workplace safety. The report includes examples of hazard trees for various workplaces and activities with specific hazards. It also presents a computer application entitled GAP for the generation of occupational hazard trees. This enables the identification of weaknesses in the safety system and the design and assessment of preventive measures. A CD-ROM containing the GAP software and its user manual is included.
