Abstract Dimethylformamide (DMF) is used mainly as a solvent in the production of polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylonitrile and various fibres and coatings. Animal experiments show DMF to be hepatotoxic at high doses. DMF vapours are absorbed in the airways and through the skin. In experimental studies on volunteers, DMF retention in the lungs was about 90%. Liquid DMF applied to the skin is rapidly absorbed and the absorption coefficient determined in humans is 9mg/cm2/h. Systemic activity on the liver is considered to be the critical effect. To determine a threshold limit value, the NOAEL value of 75mg/m3 established for inhalation exposure in rats was used. Taking the above findings into account, it is proposed that the current threshold limit value of 10mg/m3 for DMF be retained.
