Abstract This report concerns the assessment of the optical hazard associated with light emitting diodes (LEDs) and more laser-like intermediate sources. It describes the results of a study that provide support for a technique proposed for the measurement of apparent source size when observed from the most hazardous viewing distance. The results of this study allow, for the first time, an estimate of the potential optical hazard of LEDs and other intermediate sources, in accordance with current safety standards.
