Abstract This special feature article focuses on sex-linked differences with respect to occupational accidents and diseases. In general, there is a higher frequency of accidents among men and of occupational diseases among women. The following aspects are discussed: occupational accidents; musculoskeletal disorders; ergonomics; stress; risks of infection among health care personnel; respiratory disorders; cancers; hearing loss. A summary of the findings of a European survey on women health care workers is included.
