Abstract The objective of this manual is to contribute to the reduction of health and safety problems related to the use of drugs and alcohol in the maritime industry through the promotion of awareness and information. It provides the background and practical information necessary to develop, implement and evaluate comprehensive prevention programmes. Contents: drugs and alcohol in the workplace; drugs and alcohol in the maritime industry; responsibilities; comprehensive substance abuse prevention programme. Appendices include sample workplace drug and alcohol policies together with ILO and WHO guidelines on drug and alcohol testing and screening examinations for seafarers.
