Abstract The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess whether questionnaires distributed by marine health services could be used for the surveillance of problems related to the working environment and occupational hazards of seafarers. It was based on questionnaires addressing issues of the working environment and working conditions. The marine medical services of five countries distributed 1119 questionnaires, of which 1068 were returned. The degree of completeness of the responses ranged between 92% and 100%. A second test was carried out in three countries to assess the reliability of the responses, which was found to range between 94% and 100%. It is concluded that this method can be used to assess the health and working conditions of seafarers.
