Abstract The construction sector is among those presenting the highest accident rates. In Colombia, it employs around 10% of the working population. Despite the lack of reliable statistics, it is obvious that there are serious gaps in the occupational safety and health situation within this sector. Topics covered in this review article on safety in the construction sector in Colombia: occupational safety and health organization in construction enterprises; subcontracting; occupational accident statistics for the year 2002 and trends between 2000 and 2002; electrical hazards and protective measures; Colombian legislation and regulations, and international agreements; personal protective equipment.
