Abstract In this study, the personal and occupational characteristics of workers of two waste disposal enterprises in Brazil (A and B) assigned to garbage sorting were examined, and the main types of accidents and injuries affecting these workers were described. A questionnaire was given to 50 randomly-selected workers in each enterprise. The average age of the workers was 34 years in enterprise A and 22 years in enterprise B. 66% of the workers in enterprise B had less than five years of tenure, whereas in enterprise A, 95% had been employed for more than five years. Injury rates were very high, 90% in enterprise A and 46.6% in enterprise B. The most affected body parts were the lower extremities, followed by the upper extremities and the spinal column. Workers at neither enterprise wore the personal protective equipment required for this activity, which could explain the relatively high injury rates.
