Title Effective intervention with ergonomics, antivibration gloves, and medical surveillance to minimize hand-arm vibration hazards in the workplace
Bibliographic information Dec. 2003, Vol.45, No.12, p.1312-1317. 10 ref.
Abstract To determine and monitor the level of hand-arm vibration syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome among workers exposed to upper extremity vibration, 165 workers in eight different facilities with similar vibration exposure were given a vibration exposure questionnaire and subjected to medical examinations. Workers who had no symptoms were placed in a long-term study group and examined every two years. Workers with clinical evidence of symptoms were followed up every six to twelve months. Ergonomic intervention in the form of tools with lower vibration levels and antivibration gloves were associated with a decrease in the pathologic symptoms in these workers, while workers without such intervention were more likely to show progression of symptoms. These findings suggest that ergonomic intervention can be effective in controlling the risks due to vibrating tools.
